Volta Coffee, Tea & Chocolate – 48 SW 2nd Street, Gainesville, Florida

esspresso stained cypress, photo cred - Anthony Rue aka "the client"

As co-founder of the firm meta-design:architecture, and continuing in my current practice, MW Bender Architecture, I have been directly involved in the design of manufacturing and/or retail locations for three businesses that engage in the sale of sustainable goods. Volta Coffee, Tea and Chocolate is one of them…

Volta is an example of the kind of design that comes from a great collaboration. Inspired clients are the origin of great space. Owner Anthony is a cave diver, photographer, film and culture expert and entrepreneur. Volta serves Intelligentsia coffees with a Clover or a La Marzocco esspresso machine. Intelligensia coffees and teas are not “fair trade” they are Direct Trade, a step or two beyond. Intelligensia experts visit their growers at least three times a year. I would like to hook up with them on one of their visits.

Volta is located in a new “traditional” parking structure in Gainesville’s downtown. Once inside you are treated well. Here is a link to my client Anthony’s blog (page 2). He documented the project from inception through opening.

More photos of the store here. My favorite image is this annotated view.
